ALNY · Investment summary · as of 4 August 2026
Priced close to what the business has demonstrated
Business type: Compounder · scaling but economically observable
The business is not yet economically observable, so it cannot be ranked against the rest of the book.
At $220.29, ALNY requires a 18% five-year revenue growth rate to justify its enterprise value — less than the business already delivers, at 95%.
On the GROWTH axis the margin is +77.34pp — so wide it is uninformative. On the MARGIN axis the slack at consensus growth is +2.72pp.
The value rests on an exit multiple of 11.6x, a terminal operating margin of 30% and a 9.0% cost of capital. Move any one of them materially and the conclusion moves with it, which is why the required-versus-demonstrated test above carries more weight here than the point value.
The strongest argument against this view: not a valuation bear case and not the same model at a lower multiple.

Not a valuation bear case and not the same model at a lower multiple. The blended royalty rate ALNY owes third parties on AMVUTTRA net sales continues to step up with volume and mix; COGS settles above ~30% of net product revenue; the terminal EBIT margin caps nearer 20% than 30%. Compounding cause: BridgeBio's Attruby (acoramidis) and Pfizer's tafamidis take enough ATTR-CM share that ALNY cannot offset the rate with volume. The permanent-loss mechanism is that ALNY's unit economics on its single dominant franchise are structurally worse than the market underwrote — and that franchise is ~88% of net product revenue (TTR franchise, Q2-2026).
Estimated probability 18%, against the 22% level at which the position would be resized. It sits within that level.
Falsifiable and fundamental — not one of them is a price condition.
On approach to the $245.33 target the case is reviewed rather than added to; a target reached is a reason to re-examine the position, not to hold it by default. The position is trimmed once forward expected return falls below 0% net of costs, because the capital has a better use elsewhere in the book.
| Criteria | Status | Investment meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Quality | Met | Is the business worth owning under its declared economic type? |
| Valuation | Met | Is the operating path required by today's price achievable? |
| Liquidity | Met | Can the intended position be built and exited in the right vehicle? |
| Downside | Met | Not a valuation bear case and not the same model at a lower multiple. |
| Momentum | Not determined | Does price action support or complicate entry timing? Not established on the evidence on file. |
| Catalyst | Met | Is there a dated event that resolves the disagreement? |
| Consensus | Not determined | Is the house-versus-Street disagreement identified and quantified? Not established on the evidence on file. |
Quality, valuation and liquidity can prevent a position on their own. The remaining four inform timing, sizing and monitoring, and never reject an investment by themselves.
The strongest case for mispricing is that the business already delivers +2.7 percentage points more growth than the price requires. The most important unresolved uncertainty is the permanent-loss mechanism: not a valuation bear case and not the same model at a lower multiple. The next evidence that should change the portfolio decision is the next scheduled results, or a daily close below $166.95, which forces an immediate review.
