UFP Technologies [UFPT] — Trade Construction

Vehicle: EQUITY (ladder step 1 — default)

item value
Vehicle Common equity, UFPT
Ladder position 1 — the default
Implied vol minus trailing realised vol −4.7 points — IV 42.53% (UFPT270115C00250000, $250 strike, 2027-01-15, measured 2026-07-30) against trailing 252-day realised 47.20%
Quoted size at the strike $250 Jan-2027 call: bid $29.93 × 4, ask $39.40 × 5. Spread $9.47 = 27.3% of mid. Open interest 3 contracts
Argument for anything above equity None offered, therefore equity

The IV−RV number is unusual and worth recording: implied vol sits BELOW realised. On every chain this project pulled on 2026-07-29 implied ran 11–15 points above realised; UFPT is the first inversion recorded here. That would ordinarily make an option cheap.

It is not tradeable anyway, and this is the more important finding. The at-the-money January-2027 strike quotes 4 × 5 contracts with a 27.3% bid-ask spread and 3 contracts of open interest. Per criteria.md: "a vehicle that cannot be filled is not a vehicle" — the HCA precedent was 18 contracts across an entire chain, GMED's 13, CRDO's 78. UFPT's 3 is worse than all of them. The entire 2027 call chain carries 27 contracts across all strikes.

Chain depth is not strike depth, and here neither is adequate. The apparent cheapness of the vol is a quoting artefact of a chain nobody trades, not an opportunity.

Position

Vehicle Equity, and only equity
Thesis horizon 5 years
12-month target $260 (+2.3%)
Primary monitoring line, not an entry The FY2026 10-K organic-growth disclosure. If UFPT stops disclosing organic growth, that is a finding in itself (see Research §4)
Invalidation of the bear read Organic growth returns above 8% for two consecutive quarters without a new acquisition closing in the period
Confirmation of the bear read Intuitive Surgical falls below 20% of revenue on declining absolute dollars for two consecutive quarters
Sizing input Trailing 252-day vol 47.2% — the highest of the three names in this cluster. Inverse-vol sizing gives UFPT the smallest slot of the three
Correlation constraint UFPT's two largest customers are ISRG and SYK, both of which this project covers. UFPT is a levered, lower-margin, higher-vol derivative of those two names. Held alongside SYK it is a correlated position, not a diversifying one, and the book's correlation limit should treat it as such

Liquidity Criteria

$1.97bn market cap, size_bucket: small. Equity liquidity is adequate for the book's intended size; size constrains position sizing, never admission, per the brief. The options chain fails outright, which is why the vehicle question is settled without argument.
